I'm not sure what's going on, but the board wasn't connecting to Wi-Fi and so I decided to re-flash it. However, whenever I try to do so, it reboots while the programmer is trying to start uploading, and the console says:

warning: espcomm_sync failed

error: espcomm_open failed

error: espcomm_open failed

... I've never seen this before, but simultaneous to that the board reboots and the e-paper screen inverts as a result. I haven't changed any settings on my Mac and just re-uploaded the board's software last week when adjusting some settings for it.
Is there a way to do a hard reset on the device, or is this a hardware problem? For now I'm leaving it unplugged.

It’s a hardware problem. Try reducing the programming baud rate to 115200. These are symptoms of a device that is not responding.
