I was wondering if there was any hope for a 5 GHz board. This is currently the only 2.4 GHz device that I have and I wouldn't mind powering-down the other part of the network.

We work with ESP8266 and ESP32 and neither is 5GHz-capable. Once Espressif produces new modules which support 5GHz we'll certainly take a look.

Until then take a look at https://esp32.com/viewtopic.php?t=6162 and https://www.cnx-software.com/2019/03/20/espressif-chip-7-5ghz-wifi/

It will be interesting if the planned release of the ESP32S with on-board USB also had dual-band WiFi as that would make for a small and highly versatile board.
